Governor Jerry Brown approved legislation that decriminalizes prostitution for minors under 18. The move came after his office investigated California’s human trafficking underground, where young girls are coerced into sexual slavery and afraid of their own arrests. He also signed bills that will ease criminal charges for girls who were forced to break laws as human trafficking victims.
“The passage of these critical laws marks a clear shift in the public perception of sexually exploited children as victims rather than criminals,” said Yasmin Vafa, executive director of Rights4Girls and the “No Such Thing” campaign in a statement.
“We are thrilled that media and lawmakers alike are beginning to understand that there is no such thing as a child prostitute,” she said
The laws come at a time when human sex trafficking in America has exploded and the young girls who are exploited are afraid to tell on their sicko captors, who tell the girls they will end up in jail if they tell.
“There is no such thing as a child prostitute,” the campaign says, as a 16-year-old girl is just too young to consent to a life of prostitution.
